2018 Summer Reading Program for Kids

This year’s theme is Libraries Rock! As you track your hours of reading and your book titles, we will be exploring adventures with rocks of all type, see the schedule below for details on each date.  Each week will have a different theme, story, and activity.  Keeping up with reading skills over the summer is so important, and we will have fun doing it!  Registration is open, visit the library to sign up and receive your reading log and bag of goodies…

Wednesday, July 11th 2018, 7pm – 8pm  “All about Rock Climbing”

We will read about the sport of Rock Climbing and check out equipment climbers use to be safe.  Readers, you will begin tracking your hours and books by designing a character to climb our own version of a “rock wall” (hint, hint: it’ll be made of books!). Every hour you read each week will move your climber closer to the summit.  Miss Susan will speak with each reader to find out your best read of the week, and allow you to pick a FREE BOOK from her collection to keep as your own!

Wednesday, July 18th 2018, 7pm – 8pm  “Kindness Rocks”

We will read a story about friendship and kindness toward others, and how important it is to practice kindness every day. Afterward we will do a do a craft project designed to “rock the kindness” at home and also to spread some kindness and good cheer in our community of Indian Lake. We will track our reading progress this week by moving our climbers higher up our book wall. Miss Susan will speak with each reader to find out your best read of the week, and allow you to pick a FREE BOOK from her collection to keep!

Wednesday, July 25th 2018, 7pm – 8pm  “Rock & Roll”

After we read a book about the most famous rock concert ever, we will cut loose on the library lawn and listen to some tunes and tie-dye t-shirts! The library has all the materials we need to dye, but PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN T-SHIRT! Parents and caregivers are encouraged to dye a shirt of their own too! As always, we will track our reading progress this week by moving our climbers higher up our book wall. Miss Susan will speak with each reader to find out your best read of the week, and allow you to pick a FREE BOOK from her collection to keep!

Wednesday, August 1st 2018, 7pm – 8:30pm   “Adventures in Geology”

Guest educator Caitlin Stewart will talk with us about the environment and how rocks and soil play a part in keeping the world a bountiful and interesting place.  We will do some experiments with soil and examine some cool rock collections from around the world.  We will track our reading progress this week by moving our climbers higher up our book wall.  Earn your first FREE ICE CREAM coupon from Stewart’s when you speak with Miss Susan about your favorite read of the week, and also pick out another FREE BOOK to keep!

We will take a trip back in time and explore the fossil world to learn what rocks have to teach us about the past. We will read a story, track our week’s reading on our book wall, and as in past weeks, a chat with Miss Susan about your best read of the week will earn you another FREE BOOK from her collection to keep! We will also be making our own awesome fossils to use as jewelry or as a keepsake.
