Writers group meets 9.14 for workshop

WRITERS’ GROUP NEWSLETTER     August, 2016           D. Bradley

Although a small group gathered around the table this month, we had an enjoyable afternoon. We began with a piece from a member who was unable to attend, but sent a poem for us to read. It was called, Waiting Through War.  The build up kept us riveted and we were finally rewarded with understanding.  A very clever approach to a powerful topic.A new member entertained us with a piece called Observation of a Smile.  In this one we
experienced a subway trip in New York City with all of its sounds, smells and some people’s responses to the smile of our author.
In An Encounter With a Very Old Creature, we heard a vivid description of a very large snapping turtle as it attempted to cross Route 28.  Our author wisely changed his mind about attempting to help this creature cross the road.
We were entertained by a short poem called, A Mother’s Love, and then a longer piece called A Letter to Sophia.  The letter, written to a child, described an actual event of a large bear
who spent a few days in a Shad Bush tree gobbling up the berries.
Our last discussion related to the novel one of our members is working on, called Death on a Beach.  So far he has written nineteen chapters, but this day he read chapters three and four and we discussed some of the aspects of his story development.  Although the summer time has slowed down his progress, with fall and winter coming sooner than we would wish, he plans to return to this ambitious project.
