Summer 2018 Calendar of Events
Yes, we LOVE our books here at the Indian Lake Public Library, but we’ve got a LOT more stuff going on this summer in addition to a whole lotta book love…
The Indian Lake Library is pleased to present a summer full of fun and informative programs that the whole family can enjoy! In addition to our ongoing Friday afternoon knitting circle and the Children’s Summer Reading Program, we have a schedule full of cool stuff for everyone!
Wednesdays 7pm – 8pm, July 11th – August 15th
Summer Reading Program for Children. This year’s theme is Libraries Rock!
Local and visiting kids are all invited to attend and work on their summer reading lists. There will be weekly “rock” related activities and stories to encourage new interests and promote a lifelong love of reading. Sign up at the library and receive your “swag bag” full of goodies. Attendees will receive tickets from Stewart’s for FREE ICE CREAM, and FREE BOOKS are given for each time we talk about your week’s reading. Drop ins are welcome, but please sign up to ensure your spot. Visit our calendar of events for details of each week’s activities.
Wednesdays 1:30pm – 4pm, Beginning July 18th
Writer’s Group. Our local group is coming together again to share their stories and their writing. Beginners are welcome.
Fridays 1pm – 3pm, ongoing all year
Sit & Knit. (Crochet and lace makers welcome too!) Bring your knitting, etc projects to the library and enjoy some community.
Monday July 9, 7pm – 8pm
Invasive Plants in Your Back Yard. From terrestrials to aquatics: learn how to identify and these plant thugs, prevent their spread, and learn best management practices. An informative talk led by Caitlin Stewart, Educator with the Hamilton County Soil & Water Conservation District. Please sign up at the circulation desk or call (518)648-5444 to reserve a spot.
Monday July 10, 6pm – 8pm
Beginner’s Compass & Map Class. Our local DEC Forest Ranger, Jason Scott, will teach us the correct way to use a compass, and how to read a map—two must-have skills for any outdoor enthusiast. There will be a classroom instruction in addition to a practical use component. Class takes place after hours at the library, so please be sure to sign up at the circulation desk or call (518) 648-5444 to reserve a spot.
Saturday July 14th, 10am – 11am, at the Farmers Market at ILCS
Beetle Munchers! “Munchy” the Asian Longhorn Beetle will meet and greet people of all ages, and talk about how invasive insects harm trees, what is at risk, and how to prevent their spread. Specimens of insects and trees will highlight identification. This Family-Friendly venue is presented by the Hamilton County Soil & Water Conservation District.
Monday July 16th, 10am – 11:30am
Watercolor Thank You Cards (for kids ages 6-12 years). Paint a thoughtful card to present to a special person. Presented by the Expressive Arts Workshop. You must register in advance for this class by calling (518) 648-5355.
A Book & Movie, the Kid’s Version, Mondays & Fridays, July 16 – August 10
Join us at the library for readings from classic children’s literature; then bring the family to the Indian Lake Theater for FREE screenings of the movies based on those books. It’s free and a great way to beat the summer heat! FREE ADMISSION, popcorn and water provided.

All About Chipmunks. Discover surprising facts about these ubiquitous Adirondack critters from the dynamic Charlotte Demers, Educator with the Adirondack Interpretive Center in Newcomb. For the kids that evening, Miss Susan will provide a chipmunk craft and read some chipmunk stories in the Children’s Room. Monday July 23rd, 7am – 8pm
Bats: The Misunderstood, the Important, the Cute. Find out how this amazing mammal got its bad rap, and how bats are really critical to a healthy ecosystem. Caitlin Stewart from HCSWCD returns for another lively talk sure to make you see bats in a whole new light. Family-Friendly! During the talk, Miss Susan will read a bat story and provide a fun craft project with kids in the Children’s Room. Please sign up at the circulation desk or call (518) 648-5444 to reserve a spot.
Friday July 27th , 2:30pm – 4pm, meeting on the library lawn
Take a Hike the Indian Lake Central School Nature Trail. Hikers will meet at the library and walk along Crow Hill Road to the start of the nature trail. ILCS librarian Mr. DeChant and town librarian Miss Susan will lead the group through a pretty wooded forest to the top of Ski Hill for a wonderful view of our town. The hike will be just under two miles round trip.
Saturday July 28th & Sunday July 29th, 10am – 2:30pm both days, at the Friends of the Library Book Shed, next to Indian Lake Town Hall
Friends of the Library BOOK & BAKE Sale. Two days to stock up on bargains for all your summer reading needs. Hundreds of choices for the whole family: books, DVD’s and audio for sale. While shopping, treat yourself to fresh, homemade baked treats, available both days! Proceeds from the Friends of the Library sale help sustain the Indian Lake Public Library.
Saturday July 28th, 11am – 1pm, on the library lawn
Squirmy, Wormy Vermicompost How-To’s. Learn extraordinary worm facts and how to start your own worm compost system at home. We will build a “worm bin” from scratch and raffle it off to one lucky attendee! We will also enjoy some homemade “wormy” refreshments, and play some fun worm games! Presented by Miss Susan, committed vermiphile, on a mission to elevate the humble earthworm. Please sign up at the circulation desk or call (518) 648-5444 to reserve a spot.

500 Million Years of Climate Change. Join us for an informative exploration led by C. Wesley Dingman into the causes, effects, and study of climatic conditions in our geologic past, and how it relates to the current controversy about climate change in our future. Tales from the North Country
Friday, July 25, 2008, 2:00 PM. Please join us for this FREE family program!
The Adirondack Mountains are full of opposites, high mountains and deep valleys, fast streams and slow rivers, brave patriots and brave loyalists, short stories and tall tales. Storyteller Nancy Marie Payne weaves yarns, legends and around-the-camp-fire mysteries. She is a member of the Story Circle of the Capital District, the National Storytelling Network, The Interfaith Story Circle of the Capital District and the League for the Advancement of New England Storytellers. This free program is being underwritten by the Story Circle of the Capital District through funds raised by their annual storytelling concert, TELLABRATION.
Writers Group meets
The writers group will be meeting on Wednesday, Februrary 27 at 1:30 at the library. Nancy will be on hand to help digitize your poems, so if you haven’t been able to email them here’s your chance to get it on the computer!
